Florida has specific requirements for shore-based anglers to ensure the protection of our shark populations and the safety of all beachgoers.
Who Needs a License and Permit?
In Florida, the requirements for shark fishing from the sand are two-fold: you need a standard fishing license plus a specific shark fishing permit.
- Shore-Based Shark Fishing Permit: This is a mandatory, no-cost permit required for all anglers age 16 and older (including seniors 65+) who are targeting sharks from the shore. To obtain this, you must complete the FWC’s brief online "Shark-Smart" educational course.
- Saltwater Fishing License: Required for all anglers age 16–64. If you are a Florida resident fishing exclusively from the shore, a "Shoreline-Only" license is available for free.

Exemptions and Special Rules
- Youth: Children under age 16 do not need a saltwater license or the shark permit. They can participate in the fun as long as they are accompanied by a permitted adult.
- Seniors: Florida residents age 65 and older are exempt from the saltwater fishing license (must carry proof of age/residency) but MUST still obtain the free Shore-Based Shark Fishing Permit.
- Military: Active duty Florida residents home on leave for 30 days or less are exempt from license requirements with valid orders.
- Saltwater vs. Freshwater: While we fish the Gulf and the Santa Rosa Sound (Saltwater), please note that a saltwater license does not cover freshwater species up-river. If you plan to do both, a "Combo" license is your best value.
